A sofa bed will fit through a door only when its actual delivery envelope can pass the narrowest clear opening and every turn along the route. Measure the packed carton or approved unwrapped delivery form, not just the width shown on the product page. Then measure doors, corridors, corners, stair landings and elevators. A sofa bed may be heavier and less flexible to maneuver than a similar-looking sofa because of its sleeper assembly. No “standard doorway” guarantee covers every model or building.

The sofa bed dimensions guide helps with room fit after installation; the weight guide addresses handling. This article is the delivery-access decision between those two tasks. For ordinary non-sleeper sofas, use the separate sofa doorway measurement guide.

Begin With the Delivery Configuration

Ask the supplier exactly what arrives at the building: a fully assembled sofa bed, separate modules, a knock-down frame, or a carton containing parts for approved assembly. Record how many packages arrive and identify the largest rigid component. If the mechanism remains attached during shipping, it may determine the least flexible dimension even if legs or loose cushions can be removed. A detachable leg does not mean the sleeper frame itself can be dismantled.

Dimension to request What it describes Why it matters for access
Closed product width × depth × height Exterior sofa bed in seating position Useful for room placement; may differ from carrying orientation
Open product width × depth × height Sleeper in use Checks the destination room, not the entry route
Packed carton length × width × height Each shipping package including protection Often the controlling dimension through a door or lift
Largest rigid component Frame or mechanism after permitted unpacking Needed if the carton cannot travel intact
Net and gross weight Product mass versus packed mass Sets handling and equipment planning; does not by itself prove fit

Door Width and Height: Measure the Clear Opening

Measure the usable opening with the door in the position it can actually reach during delivery. The nominal door-leaf width can overstate clearance because the leaf, hinges, closer, handles, frame or threshold project into the route. Record the narrowest width at several heights and the vertical clear opening. Check whether the package must be tilted: a tall rigid carton may clear a door when upright but collide with the corridor ceiling as it rotates.

Do not plan on removing a door or altering building hardware unless the property manager has approved it and the delivery team has a safe procedure. Fire doors, access controls and door closers can have building-specific requirements. Document which opening was measured and whether its clear width changes when held open.

Hallway Turns, Stair Landings and Elevator Access

Trace the route from truck unloading to final room. Measure corridor width at the tightest point, the distance available before and after a corner, and the usable landing depth at stairs. A carton that passes straight through a doorway can still fail at a 90-degree turn. Note handrails, radiators, wall projections, ceiling changes and temporary site obstructions. The delivery team should review the route with the actual package drawings.

For an elevator, record both the clear door and the cabin interior width, depth and height. The door may be narrower than the cabin; the cabin may be deep enough only when the package stands in an orientation the supplier permits. Check the elevator capacity with the planned crew and equipment, and follow building rules for protective padding and booking. A published cabin size alone does not prove the package can pivot through the door.

Closed Product Size vs Packed Size vs Access Opening

Compare like with like: the sofa body size is not the carton size, and neither is the narrowest access opening. The following figures are an illustrative calculation only, not specifications for a HUAXUAN model. They show why an initial pass/fail decision must use the supplier drawing and a measured route.

Illustrative item Example value Decision to make
Closed sofa bed 84 × 38 × 34 in Does the installed unit fit the room?
Packed carton 87 × 40 × 36 in Can the protected package pass the route?
Clear doorway 35 in wide × 79 in high A 36 in carton side cannot pass straight through a 35 in clear width
Largest permitted unwrapped rigid component Supplier confirmation required Could it pass after approved unpacking?
Hallway turn and elevator Site measurements required Does the entire route allow the necessary rotation?

In this example, a buyer must not conclude “it fits” by comparing the 34-inch closed sofa height with the 35-inch opening. The packed side is 36 inches, and there may be no permitted way to remove protection before the door. A carrier might propose another orientation, but that requires its dimensional sketch, available turning space and supplier-approved handling method. The example does not establish a universal clearance allowance.

Weight, Mechanisms and Handling Orientation

A pull-out frame, mattress support or sectional extension can add mass and shift the center of gravity. Request net weight for the product and gross weight for each carton. Do not estimate handling labor from the weight of a standard sofa of similar width. Discuss lifting points and carrying orientation with the supplier and logistics provider. A mechanism that can move during handling may need to be secured in its approved transport condition.

If the route requires a temporary vertical position, ask whether the packed model can be transported that way. Carton labels and internal bracing may be designed for a particular orientation. Do not stand an unprotected unit on an arm, back or moving mechanism simply because its short side appears narrow enough. The furniture export packing guide provides the wider carton and handling context.

Can a Sofa Bed Be Disassembled for Delivery?

Sometimes a supplier can provide removable legs, separate chaise modules or a knock-down construction. The answer is specific to the SKU and approved version. Confirm exactly which components detach, the largest resulting piece, tools and skill required, reassembly instructions, replacement fasteners and whether the mechanism remains factory-assembled. Do not assume that a sectional separates at a visible seam or that a pull-out frame can be detached without affecting alignment.

A buyer comparing assembled and knock-down models should also compare installation labor, carton count, parts control and post-assembly inspection. A smaller carton is not automatically a lower-risk delivery. Lost hardware, reversed brackets or an unverified assembly step can delay room handover. Ask who is responsible for final mechanism testing after assembly and how the approved sample will be replicated on site.

Carton Dimensions, Gross Weight and CBM for Importers

For each carton, record length, width, height, gross weight, product code, variant and quantity. Cubic meters are calculated from the external carton dimensions: length × width × height in meters. For example, a hypothetical carton measuring 2.20 × 1.00 × 0.80 meters occupies 1.76 cubic meters before any loading allowance. This is only a calculation example and is not a HUAXUAN carton specification. Container loading requires the actual packing list, stacking rules and loading plan.

Ask whether a model is packed one sofa bed per carton or in modules. A supplier may change packing to protect a mechanism or upholstery, which changes CBM and sometimes access. Review the packed dimensions at sample approval and again before a repeat shipment if the construction, carton or protection changes. Product-page dimensions are insufficient to price logistics or assure hotel-room delivery.

A route survey for a multi-room project

For a hotel or apartment project, do not assume every destination shares the same route. Group rooms by unloading entrance, elevator bank, floor and door type. A ground-floor mock-up may pass while upper-floor rooms have a smaller elevator door or a tighter turn from the lift lobby. Use a single survey form and record the narrowest measurement in each route group. Mark whether the measurement was taken before or after protective wall padding was installed. The project team can then match each ordered model and carton to each route group instead of treating one successful delivery as proof for the entire building.

Schedule a trial delivery when access is uncertain. The trial should use the approved packing configuration, not an unwrapped showroom unit, and should be observed by the installer and site manager. Record any change to handling orientation, temporary protection or labor. If the trial fails, agree on an approved alternate package, module arrangement or model before the bulk shipment is packed. Do not solve the problem by removing structural or mechanism parts on site without a documented supplier method.

Delivery Access Measurement Checklist

  1. Record the exact model, configuration and version to be delivered.
  2. Request the closed and open dimensions plus every carton dimension and gross weight.
  3. Identify the largest rigid component and permitted unwrapping or assembly steps.
  4. Measure the clear width and height of every door with hardware in its delivery position.
  5. Measure corridor pinch points, turning lengths, stair widths and landing depths.
  6. Measure elevator door, cabin and applicable loading capacity.
  7. Compare the package drawings with the complete route, including possible rotation.
  8. Agree on handling orientation, crew, protective equipment and building permissions.
  9. Confirm site access again before dispatch and retain the measurements with the order.
  10. After installation, check mechanism operation and packaging damage against the approved sample.

Common errors include measuring a nominal door leaf instead of the opening, using product width as carton width, ignoring an elevator door, assuming legs can be removed, and forgetting a corner immediately after the doorway. Ask the site team to photograph tight points with a tape measure visible. If a route is marginal, request a delivery professional to validate a physical template or package mock-up before the bulk shipment.

Keep the route survey with the purchase order and delivery instructions. If the product variant, carton specification or building condition changes, mark the earlier approval as superseded and repeat the relevant measurements. This matters for repeat orders: a changed upholstery protection layer or frame option can alter the external carton, while renovations can reduce an opening that was previously usable. The access decision should be tied to a dated configuration and route, not to a general product name.

For the installer, attach a package-by-package route decision rather than a single approval for the sofa bed. Mark which carton enters first, where it can be set down safely, and whether a later component must remain in its protective wrap until the destination room. This simple sequence helps prevent an approved dimensional plan from failing because packages arrive in an inconvenient order or are unpacked in a narrow corridor.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will a sofa bed fit through a standard door?

There is no reliable universal answer. Compare the actual carton or approved delivery configuration with the clear door opening and the entire route.

Should I use the open sofa bed dimensions for delivery?

Use open dimensions for room planning. Use carton dimensions and the largest rigid component for delivery access.

Can the mechanism be removed to make a sofa bed narrower?

Only if the supplier explicitly documents that step for the exact model. Do not dismantle a mechanism as an improvised access solution.

Does a sofa bed weigh more than a regular sofa?

It may, depending on the frame, mattress and mechanism. Request model-specific net and carton gross weight instead of relying on a general comparison.

What if the carton passes the door but not the hallway turn?

The route still fails. Record turning space and ask the carrier and supplier to assess an approved alternate orientation, package or model.

What should a wholesaler ask before ordering?

Request the packing list, carton dimensions, gross weights, largest rigid piece, assembly instructions and an access plan for the destination sites.
